Created in the late 80's as " Marilyn Manson and the Spook kids " the group has ever since played on symbolism, mythology and even Satanism. As a matter of fact, the stage names of the group members are nearly all taken from female sex-symbols and serial killers. Fund of Alice Cooper-hard rock like style and gothic inspired make-up that would make Dracula fall in love, they have become since 1992 one of the most popular groups of southern Florida, not taking into account non-favourable critics. Young American teens seem to find in them the anti-hero incarnation, in total opposition with catholic morality. Musically speaking, Marilyn Manson obtains a first deal in 1993 thanks to Nothing Records, Trent Reznor's label (Nine Inch Nails Leader). The group is composed of Marilyn Manson (song), Daisy Berkowitz (guitar), Twiggy Ramirez (bass guitar), Madonna Wayne-Gracy (keyboards) and Sara Lee Lucas (drums). Their first album "portrait of an American family" is out during summer 1994. Since then, Marilyn Manson accumulates disks and shows, in first parts or as a musical group. Tours during which they enjoy provocations such as the famous Satan-sacrificed chicken in the middle of a concert. Now I Wonder if the chicken was dioxyne-free? Marilyn Manson is back in 1995 with " Smells Like Children " an album oriented towards techno and including a series of other groups songs, including Eurythmics " Sweet Dreams ". the video clip will be nominated during the MTV Music Awards. Antichrist Superstar, their third album invades stores in October 1996. this album is the one of international recognition and for many fans the best album of the group, the most explosive, the darkest and the most debated. 1998 is a year full of surprises. On a first hand, Marilyn Manson changes style : he gets rid of his satanic outfit to a more drag-queen look. On the other hand, the group changes its music style : Mechanical Animals surprises with its melancholic atmosphere and its glamorous rhythms, even if aggressiveness and hatred are still present in rather small doses. A live album is out in 1999 : The last show on earth which uses previously performed songs and in 2000, Holy Wood : the comeback album, dark, violent and desperate. Year 2001 is has more than ever been a wonderful year for Marilyn Manson with the "Gun, god and Government" Tour. Effectively, this album has attracted a large public thanks to new backgrounds and marvellous show costumes. The group has had an enormous success and Manson is no more a shadow. Moreover, Manson seems to be more and more attracted by the cinema and has created a certain number of Movie Soundtracks, which has increased his already worldwide popularity. In 2002, Marilyn Manson owns the most important glory of all time ! Effectively, the single "Tainted love" is out, excerpted from the original motion picture soundtrack " Not Another Teen Movie " (which is a remix from the Soft Cell group). The group becomes Number one of charts in many European countries and the video clip is wildly broadcasted on all musical television channels. Manson is then going to promote his new album : "The Golden Age of the grotesque" and publishes a newspaper on his official website. In May 2002, Twiggy Ramirez was kindly sacked by Marilyn Manson, which he did on May 22nd. Twiggy wasn't at ease any more in the group and had lost his taste of working with the other members. Moreover, it seems that he disliked the way the album was going. However, Manson declared that Twiggy will remain an excellent friend….They surely won't spend Christmas together, and New Year's eve either. He has been replaced by Tim Skold ! The latter comes from a German punk-electro-goth group : KMFDM. Manson releases the DVD of the Guns, God and Government Tour in November 2003. May 2003- The Golden Age Of Grotesque (LP), was released on the 13th. Marilyn Manson topped the Billboard Top 200 Album chart for a week with The Golden Age Of Grotesque which sold over 118,000 copies in the US its first week of release. The Golden Age Of Grotesque topped the Canadian LP chart. The Golden Age Of Grotesque was certified gold. June 2003 - Marilyn Manson takes the Ozzfest stage for the third time in his career. Marilyn Manson will be scoring the music for the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. |
